Hours Logging

New Way to Log Hours Coming Soon

We have been struggling for a couple years now with the Hours Logging procedure we have been using. It is very difficult to extract the data in a easily usable format. With little funds to design something to our unique needs, we have found an on-line  package that seems like it will do the trick. Please watch your email for more details. We will send you instructions AND you will also get an welcome email with
your initial password (which you can change when you log in for the first time. Please watch for this and follow the instructions. It's easy.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these growing pains.

Hershey Med Center Christmas Visits

- by Jeanne Beckley, MICU Patient Care Secretary Penn State Milton S Hershey Medical Center

Thank you so much to everyone who took time out during the day Christmas Eve to come to be a part of the annual pet therapy Christmas Eve visitation through the hospital. I think both the "giving" and "receiving" of the pet therapy was enjoyed by all! :)

This year we took some photos at the Christmas tree (complete with Santa). A huge THANKS to Pete Hartwell for the excellent pictures he was able to take for us!

I was able to pick up 100 of the HMC pet therapy calendars that were done at the print shop on Friday so that they would be available to be handed out by the teams as they visited with patients and families. I did get feedback that many patients were thrilled to get a calendar! :)

And...last, but not least...."thanks" to "Todd" for being "Santa" for this special event! :) I will be putting a picture and short article in Crescent about the Christmas Eve visit...

Happy New Year and my hope for this coming year is that we continue to reach out and touch many more patients and families with our unique therapy that only the dogs are able to provide! :) Jeanne

But the meeting was just as moving for the woman they met. . .

"Hello Diane and Mr. Chester,  I want to thank you both so very much for making my Christmas a very special one for me. Our "chance" meeting in Weis Supermarket on December 22nd, 2011 was a Christmas Blessing to me from God and, I firmly believe that God put all three of us in that particular place at that particular time  for a very special reason.

You see on October 17th, 2011 My loving baby Boxer , Roxy of 11 years passed away. As she drifted off to sleep I told her something and she remembered!  Thank you Chester, you made my heart so very happy and I have told so very many people about you! You are quite the handsome boy.. I truly loved all of your kisses, handshakes and your love.

I wish you both a very Happy, Healthy, Peaceful New Year filled with many many happy fun filled days. And many many treats for Chester.
With much love and respect,"

Just a note: KPETS therapy dogs do not have 'rights' to enter public businesses. Prior permission should be obtained before attempting to enter any business that does not allow 'pets'. We do not have the same rights as an assistance dog and our insurance does not cover this.

Kollege Kids need K-9s too!

Check out this story. KPETS does something similar at Etown College and a couple others schools, too! Teams are there to provide 'therapy' during both exam time and for new freshmen coming it. Keep up the good work! Click here for great story!

Tragedy in Maryland - Puppy shot on owner's farm

Some of you may remember a bit about Molly, the little golden puppy with no use of her rear legs. I'm happy to report she is doing great in her foster home in Middletown, MD with Lynette Kauffman of GoldHeart Golden Retiever Rescue. She has had multiple surgeries and survived MRSA and is now booking around in her cart. Lynette is a true angel in caring for her. But Molly is not her only rescue. This is what Lynette does. She takes in rescue after rescue, giving the best life a golden could want on a 57 acre farm with a pool and room to run.

But something unthinkable happened on Wed, Jan 4. After Molly and her siblings went for a romp, her  'sissy'  Heidi did not return. After looking frantically for hours, Lynette's neighbor found her in Lynette's field, about 300 yards from her house - shot three times a close range.

There are many links to the tv coverage covering this story on Molly's blog (www.mollymiracle.blogspot.com).  www.GoldHeart.org set up a fund for a reward for info in helping capture this diabolical person, receiving donations as far away as GA. The Humane Society of the United States donated $2500 as a reward for info on the capture of this deranged person. Luis Carol Montalvan of Until Tuesday stepped up and matched the HSUS donation.

Here is one link to TV coverage - and there were many! : TV coverage video

To see more about this sad story, visit Molly's blog at www.mollymiracle.blogspot.com. You can actually see bits of  footage of Molly romping in her cart as they tell this horrific story.

Ibuprofen works for me. NOT your dog!

- by Jolene Newcomer (from her friend's experience)

A warning to all who have dogs or know people who do. About six months ago my daughter was sick in bed. As a lot of us do, on the night stand she had placed her Kleenex, ginger ale and a bottle of Advil. My 2 and 3 year old granddaughters came in to check on mommy when they grabbed the bottle of ginger ale which in turn knocked the bottle of Advil off and onto the floor. The cap wasn't snapped on tightly and the pills spilled onto the floor. In the seconds it took for her to get out of bed her two piggy Pugs dove onto them and started scoffing them up.

Even with her quick response with hydrogen peroxide and emergency vet visit one of the two pugs didn't make it. The vet told her all it takes with the little dogs is one Advil.

Last week a friend of mine with a German Shepherd had a bottle in his lunch box on the kitchen counter. The Shepherd pulled the lunch box off the kitchen counter, broke into it then chewed into the plastic Advil bottle. Thankfully they came home before he had managed to eat many. The Shepard spent the night in ICU at the vets. $1,000.00 and a week later he is still alive but must have his blood done often to see if there was permanent damage to his kidneys or liver.

Advil has a sweet coated outer shell that is inviting to some dogs. Please start making an effort to place your Ibuprofen in a locked medicine cabinet and way out of reach of your dogs. It could save their life!
